As part of the 2014 Halloween Book Trail, I thought it would be fun to answer some Halloween questions on the blog. I'm on team The Woods (okay, there aren't really teams, but it sounds cool), so make sure to follow and check out all the awesome posts this week. This is the last stop of The Woods section of the trail, so be sure to follow the link to the final quiz at the bottom!
My latest book, BETWEEN THE STARS AND SKY, is a YA romance that follows Jackson Grant and Sarah Blake as they fall in love, out, and in. The entire story surrounds itself around a secret and dangerous game known as the Firelight Fall. It's deadly. It's romantic. And it's legendary. In honor of that dangerous fall, here are some questions and answers surrounding the book and me.
1) What scares the pants out of you?
SPIDERS AND SNAKES. No need to say more than that.
2) Would you rather be covered in slime or covered in blood?
Slime, I think. In my very first novel, LIGHT OF THE MOON, there is A LOT of blood and things covered in blood and dangerous scenes involving blood. It's a romance. *evil laugh* But really, I'm pretty sure I'd rather be covered in slime than blood. Wouldn't you?
3) Do you legit believe in ghosts and things that go bump in the night?
Serious moment: I don't know. Does anyone? I think after writing so much about legends in BETWEEN THE STARS AND SKY and about ancient prophecies in LIGHT OF THE MOON, I have to think there's something else, I'm just not sure exactly what. It's a big world, and what I am sure about is that we've only scratched the surface of what it holds. Plus, have you ever watched AMERICAN HORROR STORY!? I MEAN C'MON.
4) If you were stranded on a deserted island or haunted house, how would you survive?
Um. I would eat books. Is that an option? Can you survive on books? I'm pretty sure you can.
5) What is your favorite sentence from your novel?
From BETWEEN THE STARS AND SKY, I have a few. Here is one I truly love:
"I’m not ready, but I think maybe I have to be. I have to be brave."
I think it really shows how we're not always ready for something, but who is? Who is really ready for change? For love? For anything? We can't see the future, and so sometimes we have to be brave enough to just jump or fall.
6) What magical creature do you want to be?
I'm not going to lie. I'd love to be a vampire. I know. I KNOW. But c'mon. They're pretty cool and they live forever and (most of the time) they have cool powers. If not, I'd be some kind of wizard because who wouldn't want to have superpowers. Or an X-men. Or Harry Potter. I want to be an wizard who is part of the X-men and also lives forever. Score.
That's it! Be sure to enter the quiz over at YA BOOK TRAIL so you can enter to win a ton of really awesome giveaways and prizes!

BETWEEN THE STARS AND SKY IS OUT TODAY!
A note from the author: I'm so excited for BETWEEN THE STARS AND SKY to finally be released. This book is... different for me. First, it's a contemporary story. It's real. It could happen. Writing something like that was so different for me I wasn't sure if I could do it. But then I found these characters, and in Jackson and Sarah I found a place where I loved to write. Second, this story. THIS STORY. I didn't think I would get through it. It's one of those stories that is so big and so small and so delicate and so IN YOUR FACE lovely and scary and sad and happy that I wasn't sure I could make it through this book alive. But again, THESE CHARACTERS. I love them. And I love this story. It's a minimalistic story, so there is very little filler. Just words that mean something. To Jackson, the main character, this is important. I took what was important to the characters and reflected that in the way I told the story. This isn't a long story, but it is a big one. Complete with a crazy, scary dare, a secret game. A test of bravery. A love story. Kisses. Betrayals. First loves. Second loves. Diverse loves. All kinds of loves. Life and death. Fear and not. And in the end, I'm not sure if this story wrote me, or I wrote it. I guess you'll find out. :)
If you have questions about the content of this story, READ HERE.
"Between the Stars and Sky is a vivid contemporary novel from Young Adult author David James. Lyrical and deeply romantic, Between the Stars and Sky is a poetic and heart-stopping read for fans of Lauren Oliver, Gayle Forman, and E. Lockhart.
In the small, lakeside town of Huntington, the Firelight Festival marks the end of summer. A time to laugh, to live, to love. And for Jackson Grant, it is a chance to begin again. But there is a darker side to the Firelight Festival, a deadly tradition known as the Firelight Fall. A secret game. A legendary lie. A test of bravery. Those who fall risk everything, and Jackson is on the edge. Until he meets a girl who pushes him over. For Jackson, falling for Sarah Blake might be as dangerous as jumping in the Firelight Fall. As summer burns away, Jackson and Sarah ignite an unstoppable love game. For her, his heart is on fire. And soon, Sarah shows him life, saves him from loss, and opens his heart to an infinite and wild love found between the stars and sky."

Q1) Is BETWEEN THE STARS AND SKY a Young Adult book or New Adult?
A1) Technically, it does deal with character who are 18 and over. Most would claim this is NA, but I don't. To me, BETWEEN THE STARS AND SKY is very much a YA book. The characters are not in college, but before. They're still dealing with things we deal with before college, especially in the summer. There is sex, yes, but it is not explicit. There is swearing, yes, but not a lot. It will be marketed as a YA book and so that is what it shall be.
Q2) What's it about?
A2) It's a love story that's not a love story. The story takes place in a place town during the weeks of a town festival called the Firelight Festival. Dangerous things happen. People fall in love. People don't.
Q3) That doesn't tell me much. Why?
A3) BETWEEN THE STARS AND SKY is a minimalistic story. I promise you, every detail you ever need is on the page for you. But the story itself is rooted more in what's not said than what is. And in that, there's this kind of beauty that lends itself well for discussion. Everything is there for you, but it's up to you to see it. The story is complete. It's done. There is no cliffhanger. But there is a lot to wonder about a story where a lot of the filler is taken out and you're only left with the things you truly need. With its minimalistic qualities, this story certainly isn't for everyone, but it's a story from the heart.
Q4) So it's not part of a series?
A4) Not this time. BETWEEN is a complete standalone. Jackson and Sarah have their story and this book is it. They won't have another. I keep thinking about adding a Book 2 and telling the story of Miles and Sean, but I haven't decide that yet. Stay tuned.
Q5) What was your favorite scene to write in BETWEEN?
A5) I really liked writing the funny scenes between Sarah and Jackson. A lot of the time, I'm a serious writer - I like serious moments. So it was different for me to write sarcasm and funny lines between the two main characters in this book. I really liked it.
Q6) What was the most difficult scene for you to write?
A6) The end. It was hard to get the mix of it just where I wanted it to be. And without spoilers, I wanted the ended to have no cliffhanger and be a mix of all the different emotions played out in the story. It was difficult to write how I was feeling about these characters at the end of the story.
Q7) How many gummy bears/butterflies/worms were eaten during your writing process?
A7) You don't even want to know.

Synopsis for THE POISONED EMERALD:
The poison is spreading....
I wrapped myself in the portal’s embrace and felt my feet land on a new surface. I stood on a sandy beach that was wet and damp, causing the ground to stick to my shoes. The portal snapped shut, and I felt misty rain dance on my shoulders.
Thunder sounded from overhead, and before I could comprehend the impending storm, a gash of lightning hit the hill just to the right of the river. The ground quaked below me before an explosion of sand burst from the ground.
AS WINTER ARRIVES Arica Miller is back to regular school life at Hill Valley. After resolving the disappearance of the King’s Jewel and returning it safely, Arica doesn’t expect anything else to go wrong. Too soon does Arica learn that a great evil—a poison—has spread through the Sorcerers Underworld, threatening to take away all magic. And worse, the only person who can save the magical world has been kidnapped: the king.
In order to find the king, Arica and her friends must follow an ancient prophecy in which they must defeat vicious creatures, travel through mysterious forests, and restore peace to the poisoned land—no matter how dangerous it could be …
In this final installment of The Pendant Trilogy, Arica learns of dark pasts, unknowable futures, and the truth of the pendant’s origin. Arica doesn’t have much time left—and if she fails, the mortal and the magical worlds are both at stake.

The world is colored by different shades of people, emotions, thoughts, actions - so to define someone (or a character) by a stereotype is to ignore the possibility that they are something more, can be something more, than what or how you see them. Keep an open mind when it comes to people in and outside of books. Read and live with your mind open. #DiversityMatters #IReadDiverseBooks

Those of you who follow me on Twitter, Facebook, or this blog know that Brigid Kemmerer's Elemental Series is one of my favorites. I love it. SACRIFICE: Book 5 in the Elemental Series
One misstep and they lose it all. For the last time.
"Michael Merrick is used to pressure.
He’s the only parent his three brothers have had for years. His power to control Earth could kill someone if he miscalculates. Now an Elemental Guide has it out for his family, and he’s all that stands in the way.
His girlfriend, Hannah, gets that. She’s got a kid of her own, and a job as a firefighter that could end her life without a moment’s notice.
But there are people who have had enough of Michael’s defiance, his family’s “bad luck.” Before he knows it, Michael’s enemies have turned into the Merricks’ enemies, and they’re armed for war.
They’re not interested in surrender. But Michael isn’t the white flag type anyway. There will be blood on the ground tonight…"

Sometimes it's frustrating to hear people complain that love in YA novels is not realistic. Because werewolves and magic and vampires are? Love is often the most realistic aspect of YA literature. And that is awesome. And should be celebrated. In real life or in books, love is as real and as magical as you let it be. Especially in YA, I value how much power love holds.
